When the Ebola outbreak in DR Congo was declared in May, the Lord put it in the heart of CC Ministries and our supporters to help out. Why? Because one of the strategic ministries we already support is Ushindi Ministry – a grass-roots Congolese mission organization serving the churches and people of northeast DRC. Ushindi Ministry operates in and around the city of Bunia, capital of Ituri Province – the epicentre of the Ebola outbreak which has been in world headlines this past month.
Ushindi Ministry immediately mobilized their “missionaries” and their significant church network in the Ebola zone. CC Ministries shared the opportunity with our network of friends, and the Lord prompted generous gifts totalling more than CN$33,000 (US$23,000) to date. Donations are transferred the same day to the Ushindi team in Bunia and put immediately to work. What an opportunity to fulfill Galatians 6:10: “As we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”
The Ushindi leadership just sent us a report on this past week’s ministry accomplishments. We paste it “as is”, so you get the feeling. (Also, please see the photos and watch the short clip.)
Project Update (Received from Ushindi Ministry on June 30)
-
- This past week, Ushindi missionaries mobilized 3,550 believers (1,432 male and 2,118 female). At each session, missionaries spoke about prevention and led congregations into prayers.
- Handwashing kits composed of the tank with taps, stand, bar soap, liquid soap, and sanitizer were distributed. Total kits distributed to date is 48.
- Another 51 kits were purchased for distribution next week. The total kits purchased is now 102.
- Through the week, 136 new churches were targeted for Ebola responses. Among them, 51 churches will receive the kits purchased in the last week.
- The churches are requesting Ushindi to expand the mobilization to other churches elsewhere in Ituri, particularly in Mungwalu (another Ebola epicenter located around 76 km from Bunia).
- Church leaders have also requested continued support from Ushindi Ministry for training on trauma healing, to address the psychological issue they have due to Ebola burden.
May God bless them all.
Despite limited resources and huge challenges, the Ushindi Ministry team continues to fulfill their calling on the front lines of need. Much more still needs to be done – and it will, with some help from outside friends!
